Why God Made Seasons—I Cherrish Winter!

I LOVE, love, love the versatility of the Seasons!  I love that within those Seasons—every day, week and year are different!  I love that we eat differently in each Season!

The Seasons became one of the biggest factors in where we wanted to settle down in our “mature” years after our adventurous travels.  We both wanted four seasons!  I love every part of every Season that God provides and I have my take on why He created Winter!

For me, God made Winter for rest and hibernation!  I believe that He intended us to give our body and soul a chance to revive from the activities of the other Seasons, to be able to sit and reflect, with no agenda, less obligation, and more downtime!  He gives us an “out” or the opportunity to simply “not do as much.”  Time to sit, reflect, read, write, craft and maybe correspond more with our friends and family!

We love sitting by a fireplace, drinking hot cocoa, eating warm foods but less food as we’re not moving around as much… but maybe a Winter dessert?

Our “Season of Celebration” starts almost at the beginning of Winter (for us, here in Wisconsin, anyway)!  Then comes all of the special holiday foods and the creative plating that we save to bring out just at the right moment for the given Holiday.  Our particular events start with our anniversary early September, Ron’s September birthday, Halloween, Thanksgiving and then, of course, Christmas and New Years, then my January birthday!  We add anything else we might think of Celebrating to the mix!  It’s a grand time of year!

We stop mowing the grass, watering the outdoor plants, trimming trees, planting gardens and so much more!  The outside is taken care of by the cooler conditions and we have only to enjoy the Winter!  Time to feed our bodies and soul.

If you take a good look at Nature… many animals hibernate or rest.  If they don’t hibernate, they are at least seen less, just enough to snag a treat or two!  It’s unbelievable to me that those creatures that make it through the “Circle of Life” during the nicer weather, will now hibernate/rest/sleep for most of Winter and come out the other side with Spring only to give life to more little creatures and maybe live another year all over again!  What an amazing cycle!  One of my favorite events is seeing the chipmunks for the first time in Spring!

Plants… this is the real kicker for me!  I am such a huge plant lover, a “hobby gardener” of sorts, and what an incredible experience it is for me, to see all plants die out in the fall… one leaf or stem at a time completely, not even one stem sticking up and then all of a sudden return in the Spring, one tiny stem or little tiny green thing at a time!  It happens that way here for sure because we get the hard freeze!  No plant standing!  But the trees are incredible (that’s for the Fall story)!

I love that, in Winter, we can actually rest and know that the outside is “taking care of itself!”  (OK, there is the brief interactions with the snow blower)!

Ecclesiastes 3:1 (King James Version)

To everything there is a Season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:

A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;

A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;

A time to weep, and a time to laugh, a time to mourn, and a time to dance…

Ecclesiastes 3:1 (King James Version)

***And then came the version in a song by the Byrds:  Turn, Turn, Turn

We would love to hear your version or variation of Winter, each having different weather around the country… and what makes it special for you!  Happy Wintering in any case!!!

  1. Isn’t it delightful to wake to the mating calls of the [honorary] Wisconsin state bird after a fresh snowfall? That’s snowblower to those of you in the south!
